Whew, it has been a busy week of travel for me. But I have finally pulled together a few pics of the apartment.
When I made the move to New Orleans I brought very little with me. I moved into the 800 square foot NOLA Apartment and have been determined to do the following three things.
1. Figure out how to functionally live in 800 sq feet with no closet space.
2.Resist lifestyle inflation. (No buying all new furniture here).
3. Furnish and decorate inexpensively yet with a “grown up” feel (no college futons).
A little over two months in with purchases from friends, Craigslist, & antique malls and NOLA Apartment has achieved version 1.0 status. There is still lots I want to do and it will be an ongoing project.
As of now $611 has been spent on major items (not tracking small things). $165 has been earned from selling items previously owned but not needed for a net of $446 spent. Since a dresser at Target can run in the $300 dollar range, I don’t think that is too bad.
I’m not the amazingly creative person who can see colors and designs fitting together in my head. I’m not a master DIYer. And I don’t have extra free time to spare (who does these days). All this means is that NOLA Apartment isn’t fancy. This is what it actually looks like (when it’s clean).
The Living Room:
Notice some of my Craigslist finds?
Wish List for the Living Room:
- New throw pillows that will set the color palette for this room.
-Replace black (not so sturdy) desk under window.
-Create art collage on wall above couch with NOLA and other art from travels.
-Add colorful 2nd curtains (the current white ones now just to keep out peeping Toms)
-Splurge: Replace couch with nice pull out one for guests.
Wish List for Entryway/ Other Living Room Wall:
-Replace black crates with basket to hold sports equipment.
-Add bench or chair
-Add bookcase next to TV for additional storage and display space. (unseen).
Since the apartment is a rental. There won’t be many changes to the kitchen.
These shelves are the only real storage in the apartment. Very helpful yet not very attractive. I have added a few baskets in an attempt to disguise some of it. Also, the second door is not used and has a gate on the outside so this area is used for storage as well.
Wish List for Wall of Storage:
-Add additional storage bins.
-Add curtain to hide storage.
Here are some of the smaller details I have managed to get in place in the main room.
Wish List for Bedroom: (Don’t mind the suitcase. I just live out of that at times).
-Improve the window shade. (the current one leaves the room very dark.)
-Additional shelves or dresser for clothes storage.
-Add bed skirt.
-Paint and change nobs on small dresser (currently light blue).
-Add wall art.
-Add vertical storage.
-Decorate fireplace mantel.
Black and white details have already been added in here but there could be a few improvements.
Wish List for the Teeny Tiny Bathroom:
- Add black strip to bottom of shower curtain so it matches the extra long waterproof part.
That is the current apartment progress. I’m off to enjoy the weekend.
